Major Success for Community Rail Humber at National Awards

The Humber & Wolds RCC sub-regional rail development project; Community Rail Humber, is celebrating after an amazing scoop of top awards at the national community rail awards dinner in Bexhill.

No fewer than five awards have come to this region, including the converted Best Marketing Project.  A delighted team of delegates from this region accepted the awards on behalf of the many members of the two community rail partnerships that promote rail travel across the region, all under the umbrella of Community Rail Humber.

A delighted David Walford, the sub-regional Rail Development Officer said, “I am especially pleased that all the hard work and commitment of the many volunteers, has been recognised.  Week after week, we have had teams out and about, across the region to promote the area and rail travel.  This has given both the local economy and the railways a tremendous boost over this difficult summer of floods and bad weather.”

With almost 100 other CRPs competing for awards, for Community Rail Humber to obtain two first, one second and two third is exceptional.  The Bridlington office of Hull and East Yorkshire MIND won best community art scheme for its work at Bridlington Station, and the Bridlington Station Buffet and floral displays both won awards in their categories.

David Walford went on to say, “Heidi Mottram, the managing Director of Northern Rail, personally thanked all our members and was thrilled that we had won so much recognition for this region.  We will not be sitting back on this success, but will use it to continue our work to promote all forms of public transport and the area over the next year.  The hard work continues, but the awards make it all worthwhile.”

The Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership promotes the Hull to Scarborough route while the Barton Cleethorpes promotes the south bank routes, all under the guidance of Community rail Humber.  All three organisations can be contacted via the HWRCC Driffield office of Community Rail Humber.

90% OF TRAINS ON TIME FOR NORTHERN

Northern Rail has achieved a major milestone in delivering a more punctual train service for its growing numbers of passengers.

More than 90% of trains have run on time in the last 12 months compared to 83.79% in the 12 months before Northern started operating in December 2004.

Northern also delivered its best-ever monthly performance figure in May, with 94% of trains on time.

The improvement in train performance represents 160 more trains per day arriving on time now than in 2004. Northern runs 2,600 train services per day, more than any other train operator in Britain.

Northern has improved train performance due to several initiatives, including:

· improving the reliability of its 290 strong fleet of trains, which have an average age of 20 years, by 50% since the start of the franchise

· providing all conductors and station dispatchers with ‘atomic’ watches to ensure trains depart at the correct time

· working closely with Network Rail to reduce infrastructure related delays and improve the management of incidents through co-located control centres

Heidi Mottram, Managing Director, Northern Rail, said: “We’re delighted our passengers are experiencing our most punctual service yet. We run 2600 trains every day and have worked hard to improve their punctuality during our franchise. But we know there is more that we can do and we’re continuing to work with Network Rail to ensure more and more of our trains run on time.”

Network Rail's route director Jo Kaye said: "This is a magnificent achievement and Northern is to be congratulated.

"Many of the problems that cause delays and cancellations can be outside Network Rail's direct control, such as bad weather, cable thefts and other acts of railway crime. What we have done, in conjunction with Northern, is get better at responding to such incidents and also to our own equipment failures.

"What we now need to do is keep up the good work so that this becomes the norm rather than the exception."

Kerry Williamson, Passenger Focus manager, welcomed news that Northern Rail has improved its punctuality record: “Trains arriving on time is a top priority for passengers and Northern Rail’s success in setting a new record will be a welcome relief for those who have been stuck on the platform or sat waiting on a delayed train.”

INNOVATIVE PLAN TO BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO FORMER STATION BUILDING

A Historic railway building in the East Riding of Yorkshire could be given a new lease of life thanks to train operator, Northern Rail.

Built in 1846, the Grade II listed station building occupies a prominent position in the village of Cottingham and has recently undergone extensive refurbishment by Network Rail following years of disuse.

Northern Rail is now working closely with its property advisors, Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) in a bid to find a suitable tenant to occupy the building and return it to use.

Neil Codrington, Estates Manager at Northern Rail, said: “The Grade II listed building is a significant piece of Victorian railway heritage and has the ability to really lift the station if brought back into operation.

“The building has the potential to deliver a wide range of uses and our agents are currently seeking expressions of interest from suitable businesses, local or otherwise, keen to secure well-located premises, which benefits from passing trade on the railway and a good commuter base.”

The refurbishment to bare shell provides a blank canvas for any prospective tenant, although they will need to finish the interior to their desired specification with Northern Rail’s consent.

Chris Harrap of LSH’s Transport Consultancy team in Leeds is confident of securing an occupier for the building.  He said: “Despite the challenging economic conditions, we continue to attract a wide range of tenants to other stations, some of which are in a similar condition.

“Hopefully the marketing campaign will identify someone who is prepared to invest some time and money in order to take on such a splendid building with plenty of potential, for which the Landlord may be prepared to offer rent allowances.”

Any interested parties should contact Chris Harrap at Lambert Smith Hampton for more details on 0113 245 9393.

CCTV installed at Cottingham Station

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has worked in partnership with Humber and Wolds Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership and Northern Rail to successfully install new CCTV at Cottingham rail station. The scheme, which provides extensive CCTV coverage of the station platforms and surrounding areas, was funded through the Council's second Local Transport Plan (LTP2) and forms part of the LTP2 Rail Action Plan.

The cameras have been installed to improve safety for passengers waiting for and alighting from trains, increasing passenger confidence and reducing travel stress for this part of their journey. The cameras also act as a deterrent to criminals and help to bring perpetrators to justice.

FLOWERS ON STATIONS

The Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership, working with Northern Rail have been able to supply a selection of plants for many of the stations along the Hull to Scarborough railway line and across the region.  Thanks to a substantial grant from the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP), support from Northern Rail and the generosity of Cranswick Garden centre,  the CRP is working with the current station groups on 9 stations.  The YCCRP wants to continue to work with local businesses, community groups and individuals to make plants and station gardens a feature of the stations which act as gateways to the communities they serve.  Sally Baird, YCCRP Rail Partnership officer said ‘Thanks must go to all those who already do so much work to enhance the look of the Stations which have become an attractive and maintained asset to this railway line. Members of the CRP make a special effort to market the local lines to encourage leisure travel on the trains in the run up to what is hoped will be good summer season and floral displays at stations do make a difference, bringing a sense of well-being to the communities and visitors alike and encourage further use of the trains.
